The Chairman, Ika South Local Government, Engr. Jerry Ehiwarior, on Monday, received a high powered delegation of the Delta State Government led by the State Deputy Governor, Sir Monday Onyeme, which was in Agbor to assess the impact of the Sunday's petrol tanker inferno on Old Lagos/Asaba Road by Traffic Light Junction, Agbor.
Engr. Ehiwarior, who had earlier visited the scene of the unfortunate incident, which was reportedly caused by a brake failure of the petrol truck, expressed appreciation to the State Governor, Elder Sheriff Oborevwori, for his concern, typified by his prompt video phone call to the husband of one of the fatalities, the timely despatch of the delegation led by the Deputy Governor and the directive for prompt relief humanitarian assistance to the victims.
The local government boss, who was visibly touched by the loss of lives and level of destruction of property, said he was grateful to the state government for its prompt intervention to the unfortunate incident.
"The video call during the visit to the family of one of the victims, by the Governor Oborevwori, to commiserate with them was quite encouraging and soul -lifting. It shows the level of empathy of the governor over the regrettable incident that has left our people devastated.
"I am assuring our people that the government will do the needful to assuage their pains and loss. What happened is heart-breaking. There is nothing any of us can do to reverse what has happened, but we pray to God that such an occurrence will not take place again," he expressed.
Ehiwarior thanked residents of Ika South Local Government Area, for going against all odds, including the evident risk to their lives, to ensure the fire was eventually put out.
According to him, "our appreciation equally goes to the Delta State Fire Service and security agencies for their inputs during the period the fire lasted. They did their best, and we remain grateful. We hope and pray we don't experience this kind of thing again."
While praying for the repose of the souls of those who died in the inferno, the chairman called for support for those whose businesses were impacted.
