*GCU Class of 92 Holds 2024 Annual Debate Competition* ~ Truth Reporters
It was indeed a gathering of bright minds at the second edition of the Government College Ughelli Old Boys' Association Class of 92 Annual Debate Competition that saw schools from Ughelli Metropolis and Environs do battle for the chance to be crowned Champions.
A total of twenty schools, which is a massive jump from the eight schools invited for the inaugural edition in 2023, slugged it out over a period of four weeks at the Assembly Hall of Government College Ughelli with four schools advancing to the finals which was held on November 15th, 2024 with Ekiugbo Grammar School emerging winners and champions and won the grand prize of three hundred thousand naira. Marvel International School emerged first runner up with two hundred thousand naira whilst Oharisi Basic Secondary School emerged second runner up with one hundred thousand naira. Government College Ughelli came away with the fourth position and went home with fifty thousand naira.
All speakers who made it to the finals went home with a cash prize of ten thousand naira each whilst the overall best speaker went home with a jaw dropping fifty thousand naira.
Teachers, invited guests and former Students of the Renowned and Prestigious Government College Ughelli celebrated the Class of 92 and commended them for organizing such a well put together competition and prayed that they continue to live up to their promise to make it an annual event.
Speaking to the press after the event on behalf of the GCUOBA Class of 92, the Vice Chairman, Mr Oke Ajeje as well as the Chairman of the Debate Competition Committee, Barr. Collins Ayo noted that the Debate Competition was put together as a way of giving back to society and to build up morally upright and bright students. They reiterated that it was going to be an annual event.
There was plenty to eat and drink as the Mariners of the GCUOBA Class of 92, students and invited guests celebrated the success of the second edition of the Debate Competition.
