GCUOBA holds debate competition for Ughelli North students ~ Truth Reporters
The Government College Ughelli Old Boy's Association, Class of 92 recently organized a Debate Competition for Secondary Schools in Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State as part of the activities to mark her Silver Jubilee Anniversary which incidentally marks twenty five years of their graduation from the School.
Eight Secondary Schools were invited for the Debate Competition which spanned three weeks.
The Schools invited were Government College Ughelli, Anglican Girls Grammar School Ughelli, Transcorp Power Holding Secondary School, Ekaprame, Girls Model Secondary School, Evwreni, Atmosphere Secondary School, Afisere Secondary School, Otovwodo Secondary School and Kogbodi International Secondary School.
The first round of the competition took place on the 13th of October, 2023 where four schools progressed to the semifinal stage. The semifinal stage took place on the 20th of October, 2023 where Government College Ughelli and Transcorp Power Holding Secondary School progressed to the finals.
The finals took place on the 3rd of November, 2023 where Transcorp Power Holding Secondary School emerged champions of the Debate Competition after a keenly contested competition.
Girls Model Secondary School defeated Atmosphere Secondary School to take the third place of the debate competition.
Mouth watering prizes such as a brand new Desktop Computer and sixty thousand naira, a brand new Generator and forty thousand naira and a brand new Industrial Standing Fan and thirty thousand naira were presented to the first, second and third placed schools respectively. The overall best speaker of the competition, Miss Emmanuella Omosiwe went home with fifty thousand naira and an invitation to the Silver Jubilee Anniversary Reunion Dinner of the Class of 92 holding on the 30th of December at Wetland Hotel Ughelli.
Other debaters were presented with consolation prizes which included cash prizes to the debaters and team members as well as copies of a Novel(Drum Beats of A Nigerian Child; A Mariner's Story) authored by the Legal Adviser of the Class of 92, Barr. Collins Ayo.
Speaking to news men, the Chairman , GCUOBA Class of 92, Dr Von Apochi, ably represented by his Vice, Mr Oke Ajeje and Hon Ufuoma Olotu (Silver Jubilee Anniversary Committee Chairman) expressed satisfaction with the organization of the Debate and congratulated the schools that participated in the debate competition.
Barr. Collins Ayo, the Legal Adviser of the Class of 92 whilst giving a vote of thanks on behalf of the Class of 92, noted that the Class of 92 intends to make the competition an annual event to foster comradeship amongst schools in Ughelli as well as raise the standard of Education.
