UHS, USA immortalise Regina Otite ~ Truth Reporters

The Urhobo Historical Society (UHS) in collaboration with the Urhobo Studies Association (USA) on Thursday, 12th October, 2023 at the UHS Headquarters in Okpara-Inland, Delta State organised a symposium in honour of the Late Dr (Mrs) Regina Otite, wife of the Renowned Sociologist, Prof Onigu Otite.


The symposium was chaired by Nigeria's Former Minister of Information, Prof Sam Egite Oyovbaire with the theme, 'the contribution of the Urhobo woman in the emergence of the modern Urhobo Nation'.


The all-female panelists with Prof (Mrs) Enajite Ojaruega, Dr Oghenekevwe Abamwa, Dr (Mrs) Omotetobore Egbedi and Dr (Mrs) Eseoghene Aleh was chaired by the Former Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration) Delta State University, Abraka, Prof (Mrs) Rose Aziza.


Ojaruega stressed the need for active participation and inclusiveness of the Urhobo woman in politics; Abamwa condemned forced marriage that would prevent the girl child from acquiring education; Egbedi harped on proper parental upbringing for economic independence for the female children while Aleh described the Urhobo woman as faithful and backbone to marriage sustenance.


Prof Godini G. Darah was amazed by the level of academic discourse and emphasised the need for regular symposia on salient issues in the Urhobo culture.


The event was attended by Profs P.G. Eruotor, Atarhe Otite, Sunny Awhefeada and Omorovie Ikeke. Others are Chiefs Anthony Ukere, Solomon Eyela, Rev Godwin Ivworin, Mrs Victoria Umude, Drs Emmanuel Tonukari, Fidelia Otite, Peter Omoko, Stephen Kekeghe, members of the Urhobo Solidarity Club, Moses Darah, Ochuko Arodovwen, Zita Onakpoberuo, Gibson Ikanone, Emmanuel Darah and the Otite family.
