Delta Assembly Passes High Court Amendment Law, 4 Others ~ Truth Reporters

 

Five Executive Bills, on Wednesday, April 26th, 2023, gained accelerated legislative actions on the floor of the Delta State House of Assembly as they sailed through first, second and third readings just as they were all passed.

The bills as passed include; High Court (Amendment) Law 2023, College of Health Science and Technology law 2022 and Delta State Polytechnic, Burutu Law, 2023.

Others include; Delta State Creative Industry Development Law, 2023 and Delta State Thanksgiving Day Law, 2023.

It would be recalled that all bills, except the Delta State Thanksgiving Day Bill, were forwarded to the State Assembly on Tuesday, April 25, this year by the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa as read at Tuesday's Plenary by the Speaker of the State Assembly, Rt Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori.

Leading debates in each of the bills at Wednesday's plenary presided over by the Speaker and Governor-Elect of the State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, the Majority leader of the State Assembly, Hon. Ferguson Onwo, commended the State Governor, Senator Ifeanyi Okowa for what he described as his forthrightness and proactive dispositions in presenting the bills.

Hon Onwo, in his submission, particularly scored the Governor high in his bill for the amendment of the State High Court Law, 2001 which he noted seeks to scale up the number of judges from 40 to 45.

This, according to Hon Onwo and other lawmakers, would speed up the dispensation of justice just as they noted that it would help in decongesting cases at the court.

Similarly, the lawmakers, in their various submissions, unanimously voted in favour of the bill for a law to designate May 29 every year, henceforth, as the Delta State Thanksgiving Day.

Also, the lawmakers, while voting in favour of a Bill for a law to repeal the Delta State School of Marine Technology, Burutu, law 2006 and enact the Delta State Polytechnic, Burutu Law, 2023, noted that the bill when passed into law, would help in upgrading the current status of the School to an institution that has the capacity for rye award of Higher National Diploma (HND)

Speaking extensively on the merits of the bill, the lawmakers were unanimous that following the anticipated upgrade, the institution would have increased chance of enhanced funding.

Truth Reporters gathered that all five Bills, were unanimously adopted by the lawmakers following a vote called by the Speaker, Rt Hon Sheriff Oborevwori.

Commending the lawmakers for what he described as their legislative ingenuity in the passage of the bills, the Speaker explained that the feat speaks volume of their commitment and dedication to their assignment.

The House adjourned plenary till May 2, this year.
