The African Child Foundation (ACF) has celebrated this years' edition of the International Day of the African Child with a call on parents, guardians and the society at large to protect and promote the welfare of the African Child.

Nigeria's Country Director of the African Child Foundation, Amb. Donaldson Onosakponome stated this in a statement on Sunday in Lagos.

"Today we celebrate the international Day of the African Child, The importance of children in shaping humanity cannot be overemphasized. They give relevance and meaning to our lives, they deserve to be protected and celebrated. As leaders of tomorrow, the children should be assisted to live their dream by supporting them to break new frontier in the global space.

"At the Foundation, we reaffirm our resolve towards promoting the welfare of Children world over and Africa in particular. The Foundation call on government at all levels to rise to the occasion of protecting the children and ensuring that their welfare and safety is top on their policy agenda.

"The children make the world a better place therefore they deserve our love, care, protection and attention," he stated

The Day of the African Child (DAC) is commemorated every year on 16th June by all member states of African Union (AU), and its corresponding partners. The continent-wide holiday commemorates the spirit of the South African children who sparked the Soweto uprising of 1976 many of whom gave their lives. On the other hand, DAC further presents an opportunity to reflect on the lived realities of children in Africa.
